Freight cost per gallon
Turn a per-mile or flat haul rate into cents per gallon, the number a fuel price is quoted in.
The result is an estimate from the figures you enter, worked out the same way as the freight calculator in the Energy Connect carrier and broker portals. Nothing you type leaves this page.
Enter gallons and a rate to see the estimate.
How the estimate is worked out
- Haul charge = billed miles × rate per mile, or the flat rate. If a minimum charge is set and the haul charge is lower, the minimum is used.
- Fuel surcharge = cents per gallon × gallons, or a percent of the haul charge (after the minimum).
- Freight total = haul charge + fuel surcharge.
- Freight per gallon = freight total ÷ gallons delivered.
Detention, extra stops, split drops and tolls are not included. Add them to the flat rate if your carrier bills them on this load. For the reasoning behind the conversion, read what fuel hauling costs per gallon, and for how hauling work gets tracked, load board vs TMS vs spreadsheets.
