Load Board vs TMS
A load board finds freight. A TMS runs it.
A load board is a marketplace: available loads on one side, carriers looking for work on the other. A transportation management system is operational software: planning, dispatch, tracking, documents and settlement for freight you already have.
They answer different questions, which is why most operators end up with both — and with a spreadsheet and an inbox holding them together.

The gap between them
The handoff is where the manual work lives. A load is accepted on a board, then retyped into a TMS. Documents arrive by photograph or email and are rekeyed. Status is relayed by phone. The invoice is assembled from whatever made it into the system.
Each hop is a chance to transpose a number or lose a load, and none of them is anyone's job in particular. In bulk liquid it is worse than in general freight, because the thing being handed off is more complex: a load can carry several products, be documented by more than one bill of lading, deliver to more than one drop, and arrive at a quantity that differs from what was ordered.
Why generic tools struggle with bulk liquid
- Documents are per pickup stop, not per load — see bill of lading.
- Quantity is two numbers, gross and net, and they differ with temperature.
- Access is constrained by which terminals a carrier is carded at.
- Authorisation is per combination — see loading number.
- Price moves daily and is quoted per terminal and per product.
A system that models a load as one document, one quantity and one stop cannot represent any of that without distorting it — and the distortion always surfaces in the reconciliation.
The actual choice
The real comparison is rarely "load board or TMS". It is: a board, plus a TMS, plus spreadsheets and email holding them together — versus one connected record where finding the load and running it are the same system.
That is not an argument for replacing a TMS. Most operators have one that works and staff who know it. It is an argument about where the seams are and who is retyping across them.
